Self Study Programme 611 For internal use onlyAudi A3 ’13 Vehicle Electronics and Driver Assistance SystemsAudi Service TrainingIntroductionA special feature of the Audi A3 ’13 is the wide range of optional driver assistance systems previously exclusive to larger models. The third generation of the Audi A3 therefore leaves nothing to be desired as far as driver assistance systems are concerned. The Audi parking system in the new generation of the A3 can now also be augmented with the reversing camera system and the Generation 2.0 park assist system. Park assist helps drivers to parallel and perpendicular park the vehicle by identifying suitable parking spots and displaying them in the instrument cluster. The system then takes over steering the car during the actual parking maneouvre, thus allowing drivers to park effortlessly in even the tightest of spaces. If required, the system also helps drivers to manoeuvre the vehicle out of parallel parking spaces. Audi active lane assist is also available with the Audi A3 for the first time. It helps to ensure that drivers do not leave their lane accidentally. In addition to alerting the driver by making the steering wheel vibrate, Audi active lane assist also makes steering adjustments by applying steering torque directed towards the centre of the lane. These inputs are steering recommendations which the driver can override with little effort if desired. Audi side assist complements the available range of driver assistance systems. It monitors the traffic in the left and right adjacent lanes and detects vehicles in the driver's "blind spot" as well as vehicles approaching from behind. If a hazard is detected, the driver is alerted by a warning light in the door mirror on the side of the vehicle where the hazard has been detected. If drivers activate a turn signal and so indicate to the system that they intend to move into an "occupied" lane, the warning light flashes brightly to alert them to the hazard. The Audi A3 has an impressive range of optional light assist systems. In addition to the "digital" Headlight Assist system, which switches between high and low beams automatically, the intelligent light system is also available as an optional extra. Depending on the current traffic situation, this system continuously adjusts the headlight range between high and low beam. A camera scans for oncoming traffic and vehicles ahead and determines from the camera images the approximate distance to these vehicles. This distance value is utilised to adjust the headlight range in such a way that the lane is illuminated as best possible without dazzling oncoming traffic or vehicles ahead. The camera-based traffic sign recognition system makes it debut in the Audi A3 ’13. An advanced version of the speed limit display, it detects both speed limits and overtaking bans and indicates these on the centre display in the instrument cluster. This is achieved using image processing software which scans for traffic signs in the images captured by the front camera. The system still uses the predictive route data of the navigation system, which also includes information on traffic signs.611_0012ContentsTopologyTopology of the Audi A3 ’13 ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 4Vehicle electronicsControl unit in dash panel insert J285 _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 6 Door electronics ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 8 Onboard power supply control unit J519 _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 15 Electrical steering column lock control unit J764 _______________________________________________________________________________________________________ 19 Entry and start authorisation control unit J518 _________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 20 Advanced Key ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 21 Terminal management _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 24 Interior light _ ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 28Driver assistance systemsReversing camera ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 34 Park assist _ __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 36 Audi side assist ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 38 Front camera for driver assistance systems R242 _______________________________________________________________________________________________________ 40 Audi active lane assist ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 42 Camera-based traffic sign recognition ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 43 Headlight Assist _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 45Test your knowledge _______________________________________________________________________________________________________ 50• The Self Study Programme teaches a basic knowledge of the design and functions of new models, new automotive components or new technologies. It can be ordered with or without the driver information system. The efficiency program is automatically available when the driver information is ordered and is very useful for fuel-efficient driving.611_003The well-known tab concept for selecting the current display in the driver information system has also been adopted in the Audi A3 ’13 .Instrument cluster with colour multifunction display The colour multifunction display also has a resolution of 320 x 240 pixels. It automatically includes the driver information system with efficiency program. The optional adaptive cruise control (ACC) system is only available in combination with this instrument cluster.611_004 6Electrical connections A protected "terminal 30" line and a "terminal 31" line are routed to the control unit in the instrument cluster J285. Two twisted CAN bus lines are used for communication with other in-car control units: a convenience CAN High line and a convenience CAN Low line. In addition, the control unit reads in three other electrical components: two fuel tank senders and the immobiliser coil D2. The fuel tank senders use three-wire technology. Fuel tank sender 2 is fitted in quattro models only. The immobiliser coil D2 is fitted in vehicles with and without the optional advanced key. In vehicles without an advanced key, the coil is located in the ignition starter switch and exchanges data with the inserted ignition key. In vehicles with an advanced key, the immobiliser coil is fitted in a similar position but the ignition starter switch is not included with this option. The coil is only required in emergencies if a fault occurs in the keyless starter system. The ignition key must then be held in a marked position in order to turn on the ignition or start the engine. The immobiliser coil D2 is located behind this marking.Terminal 30Convenience CAN HighConvenience CAN LowImmobiliser coil D2Control unit in dash panel insert J285Fuel tank sender 1Fuel tank sender 2611_005In addition to its principal task of displaying key vehicle information and variables, the control unit in the instrument cluster J285 serves as the immobiliser master.Immobiliser master function In the Audi A3 ’13, the control unit in the instrument cluster J285 acts as the master for the immobiliser. The advanced key function includes a keyless entry and start system. The advanced key of the Audi A3 ’13 is based on the well-known system used in the Audi A1. Unlike the Audi A1, the advanced key in the Audi A3 has an additional operating point in the passenger door and an additional aerial for entry and start authorisation. If the optional advandced key is ordered, the vehicle has the following two additional control units: • Entry and start authorisation control unit J518 and • Electrical steering column lock control unit J764Terminal 30 Terminal 30Entry and start authorisation control unit J518Electronic steering column lock control unit J764"Terminal 15" - signal 1 "Terminal 15" - signal 2"Wake up" lineOnboard power supply control unit J519NO contactInternal aerial for central central locking systemEngine control unit J623611_015Key: E408 G415 G416 R134 R135 R136 R137 R138 Entry and start authorisation button Exterior door handle touch sensor, driver side Exterior door handle touch sensor, front passenger side Driver side aerial for entry and start authorisation Front passenger side aerial for entry and start authorisation Rear bumper aerial for entry and start authorisation Luggage compartment aerial for entry and start authorisation Interior aerial -1- for entry and start authorisationTerminal 50 requestConvenience CAN busGear selector lever position "P"Terminal 58xt21Aerials for entry and start authorisation The entry and start authorisation control unit J518 activates the five aerials for entry and start authorisation. They are installed in the following positions:611_016611_019Installation location of driver side aerial for entry and start system R134 On the underbody in the area of the B postInstallation location of luggage compartment aerial for entry and start authorisation R137 Under the rear seat611_017611_020Installation location of passenger side aerial for entry and start system R135 On the underbody in the area of the B postInstallation location of interior aerial -1- for entry and start system R138611_018Installation location of rear bumper aerial for entry and start system R13622Unlocking and locking the vehicle with the advanced key The entry and start authorisation control unit J518 reads in the two capacitive door handle sensors, G415 and G416. An unlocking and locking input can be sent to the advanced key function via these sensors. The two capacitive sensors are located in the driver and passenger side door handles. No door handle sensors are fitted in the rear doors on five-door Audi A3 models. To unlock the vehicle with the advanced key, the driver must grip the door handle in the driver or passenger door. To lock the vehicle, contact must be made with the marked surface (framed rectangle) on the door handle. After the system has detected an unlocking or locking input, a scan of the ignition key is initiated. To this end, the system activates its five aerials and receives a reply from the vehicle key via the central locking aerial. The system uses this reply to check whether the key is authorised and within the radius of the operating point. If all conditions for unlocking or locking are met, the onboard power supply control unit initiates the corresponding operation. For this purpose, it transfers the unlock or lock commands to the convenience CAN bus. The commands are then received by the door control units. The door control units subsequently unlock or lock the vehicle doors.Turning on the ignition To turn on the ignition in vehicles with the optional advanced key, the entry and start authorisation button E408 must be pressed. If all conditions for turning on the ignition are met, the system first initiates the unlocking of the steering column. After the steering column has been successfully unlocked, the "terminal 15" relay J329 is activated and the ignition turned on. If the conditions for starting the engine have been met during this process, this is indicated to the engine control unit via a signal line and additionally via CAN bus. The engine control unit then activates both starter relays. The starter is energised, the injection cycle commences and the vehicle engine starts up.Reference Three TV programmes on the "advanced key" were published in Audi Training Online (ATO). The first programme covering the basics of the advanced key and system operation was broadcast in December 2011. This was followed in April 2012 by a second programme on the system processes and a third programme on the different system versions used in the various Audi models.23Terminal managementImplementation of the terminal management system in an Audi A3 ’13 without advanced key Technical implementation of the terminal management system depends to a large extent on whether the Audi A3 ’13 is equipped with the optional advanced key or not. On models without an advanced key, the steering column electronics control unit J527 is the terminal management master. On models with an advanced key, this task is performed by the electronic steering column locking control unit J764. The technical implementation of the terminal management system is described below for an Audi A3 without an advanced key.Terminal 30 Gear selector position "P"Convenience CAN busSteering column switch moduleIgnition starter switchIgnition key removal lockSteering column electronics control unit J527Terminal 15 request 1 Terminal 15 request 2 NO contactOnboard power supply control unit J519Terminal 30Powertrain CAN busEngine control unit J623Terminal 50 diagnostics Terminal 50Terminal 50 requestTerminal 15Terminal 15611_022Key: J329 J906 J907 Terminal 15 voltage supply relay Starter relay 1 Starter relay 224Steering column switch module The ignition key removal lock, the ignition starter switch and the steering column electronics control unit J527 are all components of the steering column switch module. The steering column electronics control unit J527 reads in the sensors in the ignition starter switch continuously and activates the ignition key removal lock as required.Terminal 15 The task of the steering column electronics control unit J527 (the terminal management master) is to determine the status of terminal 15. For this purpose, it reads in the NO contact sensor and both "terminal 15 request" sensors. However, it is the task of the onboard power supply control unit to activate the terminal 15 voltage supply relay ("terminal 15" relay). To this end, it reads in the following three signal lines: • Terminal 15 request 1 • Terminal 15 request 2 • NO contact The information is transferred to the signal lines by the steering column electronics control unit J527 and erflects the status of the three sensors in the ignition starter switch. If voltage is measured in two of the three signal lines from the onboard power supply control unit J519, the "terminal 15" relay J329 is activated and the ignition turned on. With this configuration, it is still possible to start the vehicle even if a fault occurs in one of the three sensors in the ignition starter switch.Generating the individual terminal status signals To generate the various terminal status signals, the steering column electronics control unit J527 reads in the sensors in the ignition starter switch continuously. The ignition starter switch consists of the following four sensors: • • • • NO contact sensor Terminal 15 request sensor 1 Terminal 15 request sensor 2 Terminal 50 request sensorThe steering column electronics control unit J527 continuously generates the current status signals for terminals 15, 50 and 75 and the NO contact based on the signals provided by these sensors. The current terminal status signal is continuously transmitted to the other control units via the convenience CAN.Terminal 50 The engine control unit receives the requests to start the internal combustion engine from the steering column electronics control unit J527. The request is sent across a signal line and additionally via CAN bus. The engine control unit activates both starter relays (J906 and J907). To this end, the engine control unit closes its internal switches and connects both relay lines to ground. Both relays then close their switching contacts and terminal 50 is available to the starter. A protected diagnostic line allows the engine control unit to check whether terminal 50 has actually been switched.NO contact The NO contact is activated by inserting the ignition key into the ignition starter switch. If this is detected by the steering column electronics control unit J527 by reading in the NO contact sensor, it transfers the information "NO contact on" to the CAN bus and to a signal line routed to the onboard power supply control unit J519. There exists no "NO contact" line for supplying consumers. The NO contact is deactivated by removing the ignition key from the igniton starter lock. This information is also acquired by reading in the NO contact sensor.Terminal 75 No separate "terminal 75" relay is fitted in the Audi A3 ’13. Other control units receive the current status of "terminal 75" from the steering column electronics control unit J527 via the CAN bus.25How terminal management is implemented in an Audi A3 ’13 with advanced keyTerminal 30Gear selector position "P"Convenience CAN busElectrical steering column lock control unit J764Terminal 15 request 1 Terminal 15 request 2 NO contactOnboard power supply control unit J519Terminal 30Terminal 50 requestTerminal 15Terminal 15Powertrain CAN busEngine control unit J623Terminal 50 diagnostics Terminal 50611_023Key: E408 J329 J906 J907 Entry and start authorisation button Terminal 15 voltage supply relay Starter relay 1 Starter relay 226Electrical steering column lock control unit J764 If an Audi A3 ’13 is equipped with the optional advanced key, an entry and start authorisation button is fitted in the vehicle in place of an ignition starter switch. The customer can turn the ignition and internal combustion engine on and off using the entry and start authorisation button E408.Terminal 50 The engine control unit receives the request to start the internal combustion engine from the electronic steering column lock control unit J764. The request is sent across a signal line and additionally via the convenience CAN bus. The engine control unit activates both starter relays (J906 and J907). To this end, the engine control unit closes its internal switches and connects both relay lines to ground. Both relays then close their switching contacts and terminal 50 is available to the starter.Entry and start authorisation button E408 Button E408 consists of two microswitches. Both are read in by the electronic steering column locking control unit J764. They are actuated as long as button E408 is pressed. The electronic steering column locking control unit J764 determines the current status of terminals 15, 50 and 75 and the NO contact by continuously reading in the microswitches. The current terminal status signal is continuously transmitted to the other control units via the convenience CAN. If either of the microswitches in the entry and start authorisation button E408 is faulty, the vehicle can no longer be started. In this case, too, it is no longer possible to turn on the ignition. The internal combustion engine can be shut off with a push of the button one more time only. A protected diagnostic line allows the engine control unit to check whether terminal 50 has actually been switched.Terminal 75 No separate "terminal 75" relay is fitted in the Audi A3 ’13 any longer. The other control units receive the current status of "terminal 75" from the electronic steering column lock control unit J764 via the convenience CAN bus.NO contact and terminal 15 After pressing the entry and start authorisation button E408, a check is subsequently made of the advanced key. If this check is successful, the electronic steering column locking control unit J764 activates the NO contact and turns on the ignition. To turn on the ignition, voltage is applied to the following three signal lines: • Terminal 15 request 1 • Terminal 15 request 2 • NO contactOnboard power supply control unit J519 The three signal lines are read in by the onboard power supply control unit J519. If voltage is present in at least two of the three signal lines, the "terminal 15" relay J329 is activated and the ignition is turned on. As a result, it is still possible to start the vehicle in the event of an open circuit in one of the three signal lines.27Interior lightTwo versions are available for the Audi A3 ’13 in combination with the interior light: 1. This is a videobased park assist system which greatly simplifies parking in reverse. The reversing camera system has been available in Audi models since 2006.Installation location of the reversing camera system control unit J772611_029The reversing camera is integrated subtly into the rear hatch handle, from where it monitors the area behind the vehicle. A semiconductor chip in the reversing camera is used to capture images. This image capture sensor uses CMOS technology and captures colour images with a horizontal resolution of 640 pixels and a vertical resolution of 492 pixels. The camera lens has a dirt repellent coating. If the lens should nevertheless be dirty, it is the task of the driver to clean it. The driver can tell if the lens is dirty by the deteriorating image quality on the display. A dirty lens detection system with driver warning is not presently implemented.611_030 34System implementationTerminal 30Terminal 30High lineLow lineInformation electronics control unit 1 J794Infotainment CAN busReversing camera system control unit J772Power supply CameraCamera groundReversing camera R189Shielding Video lineShielding Video line611_031The reversing camera R189 is powered by the reversing camera system control unit J772. The control unit J722 also adds guide lines and areas to the camera image. To display the customer as high a quality an image as possible, it is necessary to calibrate thesystem. A single calibration is performed after the vehicle has been assembled at the plant and must be repeated after carrying out various types of work on the vehicle or damage to the vehicle. The dewarped image is then transferred to the information electronics control unit 1 J794 by video line. To transfer control commands and required vehicle information, both control units J722 and J794 are connected to the convenience CAN.Reference For further information on the reversing camera, refer to Self Study Programme 375 "Audi Q7 – New driver assist systems".35Park assistPark assist is also available as an option with the new Audi A3 ’13. This is the Generation 2.0 Audi parking system first featured on the Audi A7 Sportback in 2010. The system has the same range of functions as that described in Self Study Programme 600, the new model having received only minor modifications. The Audi parking system control unit J791 is a new development and will in future serve as the parking aid and park assist control unit in Modular Longitudinal Platform (MLP) models. The most obvious changes is the smaller size of the control unit and the reduction in the number of connectors to two.611_032System implementationTerminal 15Convenience CAN HighConvenience CAN LowAudi parking system control unit J791611_033Key: E266 E581 G203 G204 G205 G206 G252 G253 G254 G255 Parking aid button Audi parking system button Rear left parking aid sender Rear centre left parking aid sender Rear centre right parking aid sender Rear right parking aid sender Front right parking aid sender Front centre right parking aid sender Front centre left parking aid sender Front left parking aid sender G568 G569 G716 G717 H15 H22 J791 Front left parking aid steering sender, left-hand side of vehicle Front right parking aid steering sender, right-hand side of vehicle Rear left parking aid steering sender Rear right parking aid steering sender Rear parking aid warning buzzer Front parking aid warning buzzer Audi parking system control unit36Parking assistance in parallel parking spots The requirements relating to the size of parallel and perpendicular parking spots are unchanged compared to the park assist system of the C7 platform. The park assist system parks the A3 in such a way that on the completion of the parking manoeuvre the vehicle is the same distance from both neighbouring vehicles.611_03537Audi side assistThe new Audi A3 ’13 offers Audi side assist for the first time in an A3 model.611_036The task of Audi side assist is to monitor the area behind and to the side of the vehicle using radar sensors, and to assist the driver when changing lane. The monitored area also includes the socalled "blind spot". This is monitored on both the driver and passenger sides. There is a dedicated radar sensor for each side.If Audi side assist detects a critical situation which could result in an accident were the driver to change lane, the system informs or warns the driver. The driver is informed by intensive flashing of the warning light in the door mirror on the side of the vehicle where the hazard has been detected.Reference For further information on "Audi side assist", refer to Self Study Programme 375 "Audi Q7 – New driver assistance systems".38Implementation of the function on the vehicle Two additional control units are fitted behind the rear bumper cover in models with the Audi side assist option: the Audi side assist control unit J769 and Audi side assist control unit 2 J770. Each control unit is responsible for monitoring one side of the vehicle or adjacent lane and consists of a central processor unit and a radar sensor. The Audi side assist control unit J769 is the master control unit of the function, and is also an extended CAN bus user. It monitors the right-hand side of the vehicle. The Audi side assist control unit 2 J770 is the slave control unit and communicates with the master control unit via a private CAN bus. It monitors the left-hand side of the vehicle. The control unit J770 is also responsible for activating both Audi side assist warning lamps in the door mirrors.Terminal 15Audi side assist control unit J769CAN Private High CAN Private LowAudi side assist control unit 2 J770Audi side assist warning lamp in driver side door mirror K233Audi side assist warning lamp in passenger side door mirror K234 High line Low lineExtended CAN bus611_038There is no separate button in the Audi A3 ’13 for activating the assist function. It has a resolution of 1024 x 512 pixels and an aperture angle of 46 degrees. The system is supplied by BOSCH. As with the front camera for driver assistance systems R242 in the Audi Q3, the front camera of the Audi A3 ’13 has a powerful central processing unit which eliminates the need for an additional image processing control unit.611_040The front camera for driver assistance systems R242 is used in the following driver assistance systems: • Audi active lane assist • Camera-based traffic sign recognition • Headlight assist (digital version – "hard" changeover between high and low beam) • Intelligent light system (analogue version – adapts the headlight range continuously to the conditions) • adaptive cruise control (ACC)!40Note Calibration tool VAS6430 is required by servicing personnel to calibrate the camera. For further information about the calibration procedure, refer to the relevant workshop manual.Influence of the front camera R242 on the ACC function If adaptive cruise control (ACC) is ordered with the Audi A3 ’13, this does not necessitate fitting the front camera for driver assistance systems R242. The optional ACC system can be used in the Audi A3 ’13 without the need for a front camera. However, installing the front camera R242 on the vehicle allows the ACC system to respond predictively to traffic situations. This improvement is achieved by monitoring the positions of vehicles driving ahead. By continuously monitoring the traffic, the system can tell when a vehicle driving ahead in the same lane is about to change lanes. The system can also tell whether a vehicle driving ahead is about to change from an adjacent lane to its own lane. This information is factored into the ACC control algorithm, resulting in smoother and more predictive control response.Electrical connections of the front camera for driver assistance systems R242 A new CAN bus is used for exchanging data between the front cameras R242 and the ACC control unit J428: the CAN sensor. This is a high-speed CAN bus and is used solely for exchanging data between both control units. Control units R242 and J428 are also extended CAN bus users. The Audi lane assist windscreen heater Z67 is also connected to the front camera for driver assistance systems R242. It can be used to remove condensation and ice from the camera lens, when needed.Terminal 15Terminal 15Extended CAN bus HighAudi lane assist windscreen heater Z67Extended CAN bus LowFront camera for driver assistance systems R242CAN Sensor HighACC control unit J428CAN Sensor Low611_04141Audi active lane assistThe Audi active lane assist system in the Audi A3 ’13 is based on the system used in the Audi A6/A7. As regards system control response, the driver can again choose between two system modes, i.e. "early" or "late" corrective steering input. A key difference between this and Audi active lane assist in the Audi A6/A7 is that the function is now fully integrated in the front camera for driver assistance systems R242. Another difference is that the auxiliary functions "intentional lane change without turn signal activation" and "system response to detected obstacles in adjacent lane" are not implemented (for more information on both auxiliary functions, refer to pp. 30/31 of SSP 483).Corrective steering input "early"611_042The "early" corrective steering input mode helps drivers to keep their vehicle in the centre of the lane.In this mode, corrective steering inputs are made continuously in order to keep the vehicle in the centre of its lane.Corrective steering input "late"611_043The "late" corrective steering input mode helps drivers to avoid inadvertently leaving their lane.In this mode, corrective steering inputs are not made until the vehicle has already moved close to the lane marker line.Reference For more detailed information about Audi active lane assist, please refer to Self Study Programme 483 "Audi A7 Sportback – Convenience electronics and Audi active lane assist".42Camera-based traffic sign recognitionThe camera-based traffic sign recognition system is available in the Audi A3 ’13 for the first time. This is an advanced version of the speed limit display function, which was offered for the first time at launch of the Audi A7 Sportback. To identify the traffic signs which appear on the display, the camera-based traffic sign recognition system uses three main sources of information: 1. The information on detected traffic signs extracted from the camera images by the image processing software. 2. Information extracted from the predictive route data which the navigation unit in the information electronics control unit 1 J794 makes available to the other control units. 3. The statutory speed limits stored in the front camera for driver assistance systems R242 for each road type in the various countries611_044In addition to the introduction of the new designation "camerabased traffic sign recognition", the following significant changes have been made: • The function now also displays overtaking bans • The number of markets in which the function is available has been increased to include the following countries: Slovenia, Bulgaria, Greece, Romania, Hungary, Croatia and SlovakiaThe "camera-based traffic sign recognition" function requires the following hardware in the Audi A3 ’13: • Front camera for driver assistance systems R242 (master control unit of the function) • MMI Navigation plus • Instrument cluster with colour multifunction displayThe driver has the following adjustment options in the MMI: • Extended display On / Off • Display "Signs for trailers": On / OffReference For further information about the speed limit display, refer to SSP 482 "Audi A7 Sportback Head-up Display and Speed Limit Display".43Display of traffic signs in the multifunction display Display of three speed limits in full-screen format Up to three speed limits can be displayed simultaneously on the full-screen display. The additional signs accompanying the speed limits are displayed below the speed limits. The camera-based traffic sign display system can display the following a
