Extended Service IntervalOil change? Not until next year!e ServicOilSP44_12Model Year 2001 sees the introduction of the Extended Service Interval at ŠKODA for the Octavia model range. Depending on the model and engine version, service intervals of up to 2 years or a maximum of 30000 km in the case of petrol engines and 50000 km in the case of certain diesel engines, are now possible. This makes it possible to comply with customer wishes for reduction in the amount of service work, and also reflects the competitive situation. It is the technical evolutions of the engines, new wear-resistant engine oils, lowmaintenance lead-calcium battery, as well as a further development of the service interval display which create the technical requirements for this advance. Each service on a vehicle featuring the extended service interval always includes an oil change.Note: The extended service interval will be introduced initially on the Octavia.Protected by copyright. These make it possible to achieve a significant extension of the service intervals. The driver is informed in good time of the distance remaining until the next service is due by means of a modified service interval display. What is the special feature of the extended service interval?Service intervals no longer need to be stated as fixed intervals. Service intervals are determined from the conditions of operation of the vehicle as well as from the style of driving. How is the driver aware when a service is due?The display in the dash panel insert informs the driver of the distance remaining until the next service is due. What are the displays of the extended service interval?Warning if oil level is low. Warning if brake pads at wear limit. Distance remaining until next service is due. What are the positive effects of the extended service interval? The extended service intervals greatly reduce the quantity of oil consumed over the entire life of the vehicle as a result of a smaller number of oil changes. A smaller quantity of old oil is produced which minimises disposal and environmental problems. Operating costs are reduced.Protected by copyright. S. does not guarantee or accept any liability with respect to the correctness of information in this document. Copyright by ŠKODA AUTO A. S.Are there any special points to note in respect of the grade of oil and oil changes?Yes! The extended service interval is only possible if engine oils conforming with certain VW standards are used. If oils conforming with other VW standards are used, the dash panel insert must be programmed accordingly. In this case, only fixed service intervals of 15000 km or once year are possible for the oil change.4GB Extended Service IntervalOverview of the extended service intervalExtended service intervalVisual inspectionWarning indicatorWear indicatorLow-maintenance lead-calcium batteryProtected by copyright. It is based on the particular model and engine. Cars profiting from the full benefits of the extended service interval are recognizable from the PR number "QG1" on the vehicle data sticker. This is used in 2 versions for each vehicle. Sticker 1 is affixed in the luggage compartment of the vehicle and sticker 2 in the service booklet of the vehicle.12Note: Pay attention also to the following PR numbers: QG0 Standard service interval (15000 km or max. 1 year) QG2 Extended service intervals every 2 years/30000 km (petrol engines) or 50000 km (diesel engines), but oil change service every 15000 km or once a yearExamples of stickersSP44_32"Next Service" sticker A new sticker "Next service date" has also been introduced at the same time as the extended service interval. If the extended service interval applies to the vehicle, a cross is made in the box "as per display". It computes the distance remaining until the next Inspection Service on the basis of the appropriate information. The extended service intervals are only possible if the dash panel insert is coded accordingly, and if the specified engine oil is used. The next service interval is calculated flexibly only if the service interval display has been reset using V.A.G 1552, V.A.G 1551 or VAS 5051, after a service event.Fixed service intervals 1 year/ 15000 km for oil changeIt is also possible to set a fixed interval of 15000 km/1 year for the oil change. This is necessary if the engine oil used does not conform with the LongLife specification. It is also possible to reset the service interval display at the dash panel insert. In this case, a fixed interval of 1 year/15000 km is set automatically, however. The procedure is also described in the Owner's Manual.Note: The service interval display must be reset (adapted) each time a Delivery Protected by copyright. What this produces is a value which is a measure for the wear of the engine oil resulting from thermal stresses. This in turn is used to calculate the distance remaining until the next service required. Once the conditions for activating the service pre-warning or the service event are reached, an indication of the next service required appears in the display.12GB Calculating the service intervals – diesel enginesInput Distance driven parameters (m)Engine load (%) or (l/h)Engine speed (rpm)Oil temperature (oC)Soot load of engine oil Temperature Temperature Engine speed SDistance (m) SSoot* (m) Maps (stored in engine control unit)Thermal oil loadEngine speed SWear* (m)Protected by copyright. The comparison of the input parameters of engine speed and engine load with the "soot load" map is performed by analogy. What is obtained is a comparative value of the distance driven " SSoot*" in metres.* These parameters are determined arithmetically in the engine control unit. The two comparative values for the distance driven and the directly input value for the distance driven (SDistance) are totalized in 3 separate memories (non-volatile). The control unit calculates the remaining distance until the next service due from these three values in a time cycle of 1 Hz. Once the conditions for activating the service pre-warning or the service event are reached, an indication of the next service required appears in the display.GB13 Extended Service IntervalEngine oilEngine oil conforming to VW standard The engine oil is an essential element of the engine design. ŠKODA engines must be filled with oils which are approved in conformity with the VW standard. Oils of the specified standard must also be used for topping up. New oil standard in combination with extended service interval with flexible display (LongLife oils) Various oil companies, cooperating with the Volkswagen Group, have developed synthetic engine oils conforming to new standards to permit introduction of the extended service interval. It is only possible to achieve the long service intervals without a damage to the mechanical components of the engine, if these special oils are used.SP44_07SP44_11Type of engineOil standardProtected by copyright. This ensures that the correct oil is always available for topping up.It is possible that a customer has to top up the oil, for example if an oil level warning is indicated between service events because the oil is at its minimum level. If, for example, oil conforming to the new standard is not available at a filling station, not more than 0.5 liter of oil conforming to the standard VW 502 00 may be topped up in the case of petrol engines, and oil conforming to VW 505 00 in the case of diesel engines. This should only be done in exceptional cases in order to maintain mobility. ... it is not necessary in such a case to recode the service interval display.SP44_25GB15 Extended Service IntervalOil level/oil temperature sender G266The flexible service interval display obtains the information for calculating the oil level and oil temperature from the newly developed oil level/oil temperature sender G266. In the case of diesel engines, the average deposit of soot particulates in the engine oil which has been determined from trials and stored in a map in the engine control unit, is also included in the calculation.Level sensorTemperature sensorProtected by copyright. When driving, the engine oil temperature is constantly measured and the engine oil level calculated. Both values are transmitted to the dash panel insert by means of a common pulse width modulated signal.16GB Measuring oil temperature and oil level The oil temperature is detected by the integrated electronics of the separate temperature sensor. The measuring element for the oil level likewise operates with a temperature measurement. It is heated up for a short time to a temperature above the current oil temperature. After the heating voltage is switched off, the measuring element is cooled down again by the engine oil to the temperature level of the oil. The oil level is calculated from the length of the cooling-down period.Long cooling-down period Short cooling-down periodUnderfillingNormal fillingHeating phaseAnalysis of oil temperature 25 - 85 msProtected by copyright. The signal supplied by the bonnet contact is analysed as soon as the oil level warning has been activated. If the bonnet is opened after an oil level warning has been activated, the electronic control assumes that oil has been topped up and cancels oil level warning. If, however, the oil was not topped up, the electronic control recognises once again within about 100 km that the oil level is too low and once again activates the oil level warning.SP44_2818GB Low-maintenance lead-calcium batteryWith the introduction of the extended service interval, this means that the battery is also not inspected by the service workshop for a lengthy period. This does not necessarily mean, however, that the intervals which are possible are in fact achieved. This depends to a not unimportant extent on the operation conditions of the vehicle. – The driver is requested to have a service carried out if one of the following 3 conditions is met:–The maximum distance of 30000 km (petrol engines)/50000 km (diesel engines) since the last service is reached 2 years have elapsed since the last service The limit of the evaluated fuel consumption is reached (refer to page 12)–20Protected by copyright. Here are the commonly asked questions with their answers. The customer asks: How do I recognize whether the extended service interval including the flexible oil change applies to my car? The specialist answers: The technology required for the extended service interval is not visible at first sight. That is why vehicles fitted with the extended service interval can be recognised from the data noted on the service sticker. The point at which the sticker is affixed to the vehicle varies according to the particular country. We affix the sticker and complete itaus. Is it necessary to use the new LongLife oils conforming to the standard VW 503 00 or VW 506 00?No. The customer can choose. The new LongLife oils make it possible to drive for extended service intervals. The distance achieved is dependent in this case on the style of driving. If conventional oils are used, the previous intervals then apply: 15000 km or 1 year.Do I have to drive particularly slowly in order to achieve the service intervals with flexible oil change? What is important is a balanced style of driving. If the car is driven often at full throttle and/or over short distances, it is clear that it must undergo an inspection more often than is the case for a car which is driven at constant speeds and often over long distances (motorways).Assuming I'm at a filling station where I can't get LongLife oil. What kind of oil can I use for topping up?In exceptional cases, up to 0.5 liter of oils conforming to standard VW 502 00 or VW 505 00 may be topped up once without affecting the particular properties of the LongLife oil.Protected by copyright. S.24GB The customer asks: Is it possible for a workshop to determine whether the correct oil was chosen for topping up?The specialist answers: No, this is unfortunately not possible. In their own interest, customers should pay particular attention to ensuring that the correct oils are always used. The extended service intervals are only possible with LongLife oils.If the engine has occasionally been operated with conventional oil, is it then still possible to again use LongLife oil conforming to the standard VW 503 00 or VW 506 00?Yes. If the vehicle is fitted with the new technology, the system should be refilled with a LongLife oil and it is then possible to enjoy all the benefits of the extended service interval. Is it also possible to enjoy the benefits of extended service intervals on older cars provided LongLife oils are used? No. The newly developed oils do not help if the matching technology is not fitted. Is it possible to convert older cars to the extended service interval? No. This is not technically feasible. How often is it necessary to change the oil filter? Each time the oil is changed – as usual.Protected by copyright.
