The central electrics is split up into separate connector stations, relay boxes and fuse holders. – These subunits are arranged decentrally, in other words they are each located close to the elements and functional units of which they form a part. The functions of the “vehicle” complete system are split over several specialised control units. – The control units communicate with each other over CAN-BUS data lines. Benefits: – As a result of the short wiring looms, it is easier to locate and assign the cable connections. The short cable runs offer a considerable reduction in weight. Test points can be more easily assigned. The components of the vehicle electrical system are largely protected against moisture. The decentralised electrical system is easier to service.– –New components in electrical system – Vehicle electrical system control unittheir functions – Monitoring switches which are not integrated in the convenience system (e.g. steering column switch) Monitoring the voltage supply to the electrical consumer and of the consumer Interface of the BUS systems– ––Voltage distributor–Distributes the voltage supply of terminal +30a within the interior from the main fuse carrier to certain electrical consumers (e.g. to the relay, fuse box)– –Connector stations in the door pillars – in Mechanically Protected by copyright. The control unit also contains a gateway. The vehicle electrical system control unit J519 is the heart of the vehicle electrical system and is responsible in detail for the following functions: – It is the interface of the two BUS systems drive CAN and convenience CAN.–It integrates relay functions, which previously were performed by separate relays (e.g. turn signal relay). It monitors vehicle components which are not integrated in the two CAN-BUS systems, such as switches and fuses. It monitors the power supply to the electrical consumers and the electrical consumption of the consumers. It processes CAN messages over the gateway integrated in the control unit.–––Protected by copyright. It is connected, on the one hand, to the diagnostic cable (K cable) and, on the other hand, to the CAN-BUS systems. In other words, the gateway creates the possibility of conducting a diagnosis over the CAN-BUS even if no CAN-compatible tester is available. It reroutes the information from the CAN cable over the K cable, and vice versa. The information content received over the CAN and transmitted over the K cable is the same. The external K cable tester is not aware of the fact that the transmission between gateway and the control units is conducted over the CAN.Diagnostic connection Vehicle electrical system control unit+30a -31CAN-A K CAN-KSP33_13Gateway CAN - A = Drive CAN - K = ConvenienceGB11Vehicle Electrical System Control UnitConverting CAN information in the vehicle electrical system control unit (gateway function)Ambient temperature sensorCAN H - AVehicle electrical system control unit with gatewayCAN H - K CAN L - KCAN L - ACAN H - A CAN L - AEngine control unit, e.g. – coolant temperature – idling speed – acceleration221826Air conditioning control unitACSP33_55The multiple use of information of various systems over the CAN is a feature of modern vehicle electrics. For example, data messages of the drive CANBUS are used in the convenience CAN-BUS for controlling the automatic air conditioning system. The air conditioning control unit is connected to the convenience CAN (CAN-K). Information from other control units, which are connected to the drive CAN (CAN-A) is also used, however, for the automatic control.–Ambient temperature, is detected by the ambient temperature sensor G17 in the bumper, and is received in the control unit in the dash panel insert. This is connected to the drive CAN. Specific engine characteristic data, e.g. high coolant temperature, idling speed, acceleration, are received by the engine control unit (drive CAN).–The messages are converted accordingly in the vehicle electrical system control unit by means of the gateway function, and structured for the convenience CAN.The air conditioning control unit is now in a The example below illustrates the information position to use these messages for flow: Protected by copyright. Without this, it is not able to supply a signal. To enable the active sensor of the ABS, which is firmly located in the wheel bearing housing, to measure a wheel speed, it needs a matching piece which rotates with the wheel hub. This matching piece is known as the pulse rotor or signal rotor. A magneto-resistive element (semiconductor) in the wheel speed sensor alters its resistance as a function of the magnetic lines of forces intersected by the pulse rotor. The new wheel sensors on the FABIA make use of a sensor ring with a reader track. The function of the teeth of the pulse rotor (refer to inductive sensor, SSP 26) is performed by magnets on the reader track.Wheel bearingSP33_07The active sensor is installed in the wheel bearing housing, and integrates the measuring element and amplifier. The advantages of this system are: –it is possible to measure the wheel speed from 0 km/h and down to the moment where the wheel is stationary Protected by copyright. S. – high resistance to corrosion – low level of mechanical interference as the gap remains practically constant – less susceptible to spurious signals – it is possible to detect the direction of rotation of the wheelSensor element (measuring element)The design of this system can be presented in a simplified form: The reader track contains small areas one next to the other, which are differently magnetised according to North pole and South pole. When the wheel bearing rotates, these areas pass close to the active sensor.Sensor electronics (amplifier) North SouthSP33_03Reader track 30GBOperating principle of the active sensor In the immediate vicinity of the magnetised areas, the magnetic lines of force are positioned vertically on the reader track. Depending on the polarity, they either run away from the track, or toward it. As the reader track moves past very close to the sensor, the lines of force also penetrate the sensor and influence its resistance. An electronic amplifier/trigger circuit integrated in the sensor, converts the changes in resistance into two different current levels. S.SP33_20PTC additional heater as a supplement for the heat exchanger of the vehicle heating systemOn diesel engines, the waste heat which is available, for example for heating the interior, is comparatively small. This effect is more pronounced as a result of the intensive evolution of diesel engines. It has a detrimental effect during the heatingup phase. The heating-up phase lasts too long and this in turn results in restrictions to comfort and, in particular, also to driving safety. Vehicles fitted with a diesel engine are equipped with an electrical additional heater (resistance heater) for heating the interior in order to overcome these drawbacks. The PTC additional heater converts energy from the vehicle electrical system directly into heat for the interior without any time lag. As the engine also heats up more rapidly as a result of the additional load on the generator, the conventional heating system (heat exchanger) also responds more rapidly.Note: For models fitted with a petrol engine, PTC heaters are likewise envisaged in future for particularly high comfort levels.32GBPTC additional heater – simplified presentation The PTC additional heater is located below the heat exchanger of the vehicle heating system and consists of the following main elements: – – – – – Insulator Contact plates Connections and corrugated ribs Metal frame Power electronicsSP33_21The heating elements are fixed in place and attached in the metal frame. The heating block is surrounded by an insulating plastic frame for installation in the heating/ventilation unit or air conditioning. The power electronics are also integrated in the plastic frame. Operating principle When the function position - max. heating capacity - is selected at the rotary switch of the temperature flap, the signal “heater on” is automatically transmitted through a microswitch at the temperature selector to the engine control unit. The engine control unit switches the additional heater on and controls it in line with the ambient temperature and the battery voltage (connection DFM). 3 heating stages are possible.Heat exchanger of vehicle heating systemSP33_22Electrical additional heaterMicroswitch in temperature selector Engine control unit15 21 +15 +15 DFM 22 52 73 38The PTC heater is connected for this purpose through a relay directly to the engine control Protected by copyright. It assists the driver when reversing into a parking place and provides an audible warning if the car is approaching an obstacle and the distance is below a minimum safety limit. It is available as optional equipment.Parking aid sensor Continuous signalWarning signals repeated at regular intervals Parking aid control unit Warning buzzerSP33_52Design The parking aid consists of the following components: control unit, indicator (audible) and 4 sensors which contain both an ultrasonic sensor as well as a receiver. Function When the ignition is switched on, a self-test of the system is carried out and, after this, the parking aid control unit is activated. The control unit remains active so long as the ignition is switched on. When reverse gear is engaged, the distance detector is switched on automatically. The audible warning when reversing begins from a distance of about 1.60 m to an obstacle. If the distance to the obstacle is less than 160 centimetres, a warning signal sounds at regular intervals. The intervals between each two warning signals become less as the distance to the obstacle is reduced. The intermittent signal changes to a continuous signal once the distance is less than about 30 centimetres.Measuring principle The 4 sensors = ultrasonic converters are housed in the trim strip of the rear bumper. They operate as actuators and sensors, i.e. they transmit and receive. The command for transmitting or receiving ultrasonic waves is supplied by the parking aid control unit J446. The system operates on the echo sounding principle. The converters receive the echo which is reflected off an obstacle. The signal is received over the drive CAN and the vehicle electrical system control unit J519 with gateway J533 and routed over the convenience CAN to the convenience system central control unit J393. The doors are unlocked, the interior light and hazard warning light system are switched on, and at the same time the crash signal passes from the airbag control unit over the drive CAN to the engine control unit. The engine control unit reacts to the signal by operating the fuel pump relay, and the voltage supply to the fuel pump is then interrupted. The fuel feed to the engine is cut off.SESESEM G6SESP33_70Note: Input signals for control units flow over the CAN-BUS.Protected by copyright.
