VE OBD Gateway – MQB to PQ Diagnostic Bypass

Restore OEM Diagnostic Access After an Engine Swap

Installing an older Volkswagen or Audi engine into a newer MQB-platform vehicle introduces a common problem: the factory MQB CAN gateway does not support the older diagnostic protocols used by many PQ-platform ECUs.

Although the engine may operate correctly, diagnostic tools can no longer communicate with the older engine ECU through the vehicle’s original OBD port.

The VE OBD Gateway solves this problem by bypassing the factory gateway’s diagnostic limitations, restoring communication with compatible older ECUs while maintaining diagnostic access to the original MQB vehicle modules.

No additional OBD port or manual switching is required.

Plug & Play Integration

The VE OBD Gateway is supplied as a complete kit consisting of a compact controller and a custom OBD wiring harness.

The harness integrates the module into the vehicle’s existing diagnostic connection while retaining the original factory OBD port.

Once installed, the original OBD connector can be used to access both the MQB vehicle electronics and compatible older PQ ECUs.

Designed to Work Alongside the VE CAN Convertor PQ→MQB

For complete integration of an older PQ-based engine into an MQB vehicle, the VE OBD Gateway can be combined with our VE CAN Convertor PQ→MQB.

The two modules serve different purposes:

VE CAN Convertor PQ→MQB

Translates vehicle CAN bus signals between the older PQ engine management system and the newer MQB electronics, supporting functions such as engine RPM, temperature signals, warning lights, DSG-related signals and other vehicle functions.

VE OBD Gateway

Restores diagnostic communication with the older PQ engine ECU through the original MQB diagnostic connector.

Together, these products provide complementary solutions for both vehicle CAN communication and ECU diagnostic access in PQ-to-MQB engine conversions.

Developed and Tested for the Golf Mk7 R36 Engine Swap

The VE OBD Gateway was specifically developed and tested for a Volkswagen Golf Mk7 R engine conversion using:

• Vehicle: Volkswagen Golf Mk7 R (MQB platform)
• Engine: Volkswagen 3.6L R36 VR6
• Engine ECU: Bosch MED9.1 (PQ platform)
• Transmission: DQ250 DSG

This configuration combines an older PQ-based engine management system with the modern MQB vehicle electronics.

The VE OBD Gateway restores diagnostic access to the older engine ECU through the original OBD connector, without compromising access to the factory MQB control modules.

Important: The VE OBD Gateway is a diagnostic interface only. It does not translate vehicle operating signals between PQ and MQB networks. For engine and vehicle CAN signal integration, see the VE CAN Convertor PQ→MQB.
